Anticipating Sherman Alexie salon (2005-08-18 19:30)

I want to invite readers of this blog and others to a salon with Sherman Alexie and Jess Walter at 7:30 PM on Thursday, August 18 at Finn MacCool's Irish Public House, 4217 University Ave NE. I read Sherman Alexie's The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven the year I saw Smoke Signals. I imagine he will be entertaining in person. If you like, put the salon on your schedule and stop by my office that evening and we'll walk to Finn MacCool's.

I am not familiar with Sherman Alexie, but so far have always found authors that interest you to be worthy of consideration. . . what enticing bit of information can you share about him that will help me start thinking & wondering about his writing? And thanks for the invite.

"If we forgive our fathers, what is left?" asks Thomas Builds-the-Fire in Smoke Signals. This film's road trip is the occasion to confront the legacy of a deceased, abandoning father.

When I recommended to Teri one film for each year between 1985 and 2000, Smoke Signals was my recommendation for 1998. My own father had recommended it to me.

However, his biography lists Alexie's comedy performances, so I imagine he has a witty, comedic side as well as a serious side. Science fiction fans may appreciate another quote from Thomas Builds-the-Fire: "Sometimes it's a good day to die, and sometimes it's a good day to have breakfast."

Finally, note that the setting is a pub and the format is a salon. I infer that the organizers encourage dialogue with this local author.
